A Matter of Substance: Working with Substance Use in Early Psychosis

This manual is relevant for all clinicians working within early psychosis services as it describes the key elements involved in effectively managing substance use in young people with early psychosis.

Substance use and mental health disorders are common and are associated with significantly poorer outcomes for individuals compared to a single mental health disorder. Using substances increases the overall morbidity and mortality of individuals with early psychosis, therefore, working with young people about their substance use should aim to increase the awareness of the negative effects of using substances. The optimal treatment of young people with co-occurring substance use and early psychosis requires integrated treatment programs that combines psychosocial treatments, pharmacotherapy and substance use counselling and should be delivered by a multidisciplinary team.
