Foundations in Mental Health Practice

OVERVIEW                            

Developed by Orygen, a global leader in youth mental health, the Foundations in Mental Health Practice short course program is designed for students who want to pursue further education or a career in the mental health sector.

Students will be trained by, and access resources prepared by, experienced mental health practitioners, supporting them to receive high quality education with the latest and most current industry knowledge.

The endorsed units of competency in this program are nationally recognised and provide entry into a range of relevant qualifications containing the units studied. 

The three units in this short course program are: 

  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people  
  • CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care  
  • CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self-advocacy  

Graduates who successfully complete the units may be eligible for credit transfers and will have a pathway into a range of qualifications in the CHC Community Services training package, including:

  • CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health
  • CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
  • CHC40421 Certificate IV in Youth Work 
  • CHC40521 Certificate IV in Youth Justice

Each unit provides a set of unique knowledge and skills that can be applied to a range of contexts within the mental health sector.

CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people  

This course focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including First Nations people.

CHCMHS007 Work effectively in trauma informed care  

This course focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to work effectively using a trauma-informed approach in community services and mental health settings. 

The unit applies to individuals working in the community services and health sectors where services are informed by the knowledge and understanding of central trauma, particularly the impact of interpersonal violence.

CHCMHS008 Promote and facilitate self-advocacy 

This course focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to support people experiencing mental-ill health in building self-advocacy skills.

COURSE DURATION AND TIMING 

Each intake runs for 12 weeks. 

COURSE FEES 

$1,550 for the full program or $550 per course. 

Orygen will be offering the units as a package where you can gain some efficiencies in the assessments across all three units, as well as a cost saving of $100.

Alternatively, you may choose to study one unit at a time.
