Orygen has welcomed the Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Disability, Health and Ageing, to officially launch its designation as the World Health Organization's first Collaborating Centre for Young People's Mental Health.
The designation recognises Orygen's longstanding contribution to global youth mental health and builds on several years of collaboration with WHO, including Orygen's role as the first Australian organisation represented on the WHO Youth Council.
As the world's first WHO Collaborating Centre dedicated to young people's mental health, Orygen will work through its international arm, Orygen Global, to support international knowledge exchange, implementation, capacity-building and youth engagement.
The launch marks an important milestone in Orygen's work to improve mental health outcomes for young people around the world.
At the launch event, Minister Butler noted that Australia leads the world for advancing the field of youth mental health, "and a lot of that leadership comes out of Parkville, out of Orygen".
"It is no surprise WHO has chosen Orygen as the first Collaborating Centre for Youth Mental Health ... and I want to pay credit to Professor Pat McGorry and the Orygen team."
