US rock band Papa Roach has partnered with Australia’s National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, Orygen, to support life-saving suicide prevention research and programs during their Australian tour.
As part of their Rise of the Roach tour, the band today visited Orygen in Melbourne to donate $10,000 to suicide prevention programs and research, as well as meet with leading researchers working to prevent suicide among young people.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among young Australians, and mental ill-health impacts 2 in 5 young people every year – a 50% increase in 15 years.
During the visit, band members met with Orygen’s Suicide Prevention Research Unit, including Prof. Jo Robinson, and Orygen Executive Director Prof. Patrick McGorry, to learn more about the organisation’s world-leading work.
Papa Roach has a long-standing passion for raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention, including their hit song Leave a Light On (Talk Away the Dark), which has become a message of hope for fans worldwide.
Prof. McGorry thanked the band – Jacoby Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance and Tony Palermo – for their support, and said the collaboration highlights the powerful role artists and public figures can play in driving awareness and action.
“Partnerships like this help shine a light on the issue and support the research and services that can save lives.”
Professor Jo Robinson said it was wonderful to welcome the band to Orygen and share the innovative work the team is doing in suicide prevention.
”It’s fantastic to meet people who are so passionate and committed to supporting young people – and everyone with mental health challenges – and who really embody the message of hope and purpose,” Professor Robinson said.
“Papa Roach’s support helps us reach people in ways that are meaningful and reduces stigma around seeking help.”
Funds raised through the tour – including fan donations at the April 8 Melbourne event at Rod Laver Arena – will go towards fast-tracking suicide prevention research and improving services for young people.
Orygen is leading the global field of youth mental health, dedicated to prevention, treatment and recovery – ensuring every young person has the chance to thrive.
