Research interests of the research team offering the project

Focussing on the delivery of care, this project lies in the intersection of health services research and implementation science. While health services research addresses planning, distribution, organisation, provision, quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and outcome of health care services, implementation science studies the methods for successful integration of evidence-based practices. Implementation science addresses factors affecting the implementation determinants, process, outcomes and scaling-up with the vision to enhance health outcomes, reduce health inequalities and improve health service users’ experience of care.

Details of the project

Orygen has developed a new youth mental health integrated care model for the north-western Melbourne region. The integrated care model was designed with an aim to achieve the best possible mental health and wellbeing for young people aged 12–25 years. It aims to provide a comprehensive, seamless and integrated service across a range of mental health conditions, severity of presentation, and degree of complexity. Currently, Orygen works to implement these plans purposefully building on the headspace and enhanced primary care service already being delivered, and integrating these services with current and future state-based specialist and tertiary services. This transformation work uniquely positions Orygen as an implementation science resource, potentially presenting opportunities for the development and empirical testing of implementation strategies across various Orygen services and sites.

The proposed project will investigate mechanisms and casual relationships within implementation processes, and contextual factor affecting the implementation outcomes. It will help to develop the evidence base around successful implementation with the aim to scale-up the integrated care model beyond the north-western region of Melbourne.
