Across clinical research and digital innovation, Orygen is shaping the next generation of safe, human-centred AI tools that enhance youth mental health care, support clinicians, and give young people more connected support in the health system.
OVERVIEW
The Clinical AI program focuses on creating safe, human-centred artificial intelligence to support youth mental health care. We do research and develop technology that works in the background to enhance shared decision-making with trusted clinical information. Our work also uses AI to improve communication, reduces administrative tasks, and helps young people understand and share their story.
Why is this research area important?
Young people often experience repeated assessments, long waits, trial-and-error treatments, and fragmented care. Clinicians face increasing pressure and limited time to spend with young people and their families. Clinical AI has the potential to make sense of complex information, support clearer decisions, reduce administrative burden, and understand stories. Used responsibly, AI can help deliver earlier, more consistent and better-coordinated care.
Key questions
- How can AI improve the early identification of anxiety, depression, psychosis and other mental health difficulties?
- Can AI support shared decision-making and help young people understand and navigate their story and care options?
- Which forms of AI are most useful for reducing administrative load and improving communication between young people and clinicians?
- How do we make sure clinical AI is safe, fair and consistent with the values and needs of young people and their families?
- What standards and safeguards are needed for AI to be used responsibly in real clinical services?
Areas of research
- Early identification and risk assessment
AI models that detect early signs of mental ill-health and help clinicians plan timely interventions.
Tools that help young people understand their care options and participate actively in treatment choices.
- Clinical and client support
AI systems that summarise information, generate documentation, reduce administrative load, and enhance the understanding of personal stories.
Combining speech, clinical notes, cognition, questionnaires and digital measures to create a clearer picture of mental health.
- Safety, fairness and responsible AI
Evaluation, monitoring and ethical frameworks ensuring AI remains safe, equitable and aligned with the needs of young people and clinicians.
