Project Title

Evaluation of HOPE aftercare service for suicide prevention

Project Type

PhD

Supervisors

Research interests of the team

What types of interventions (including technology-based interventions such as ecological momentary assessments (EMA) and ecological momentary interventions (EMI)) are effective at reducing suicide risk among young people?

What are the challenges and adaptations to treatment delivery with marginalised young people (for example, young people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, LGBTIQA+, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and refugees)?

Details of the project

The Hospital Outreach Post-suicide Engagement (HOPE) service is an aftercare clinical treatment provided to young people aged 12–25 who reside in north-west metropolitan Melbourne and who are referred to the HOPE service following an emergency department presentation for self-harm and/or suicidal ideation.

HOPE was developed by Orygen, with funding from the Victorian Department of Health, and in partnership with young people. The aftercare service represents a partnership with Orygen and north-western hospitals and comprises evidence-based assessment, safety planning and assertive follow-up delivered by a team of qualified mental health practitioners and fully trained youth peer support workers.

HOPE is currently being evaluated, assessing effectiveness, cost effectiveness, implementation and scalability of the service to reduce subsequent suicidal behaviours and re-hospitalisation. It’s also being evaluated to determine the impact of offering routine aftercare on suicide rates at the national level.
