What to Do? A Guide to Crisis Intervention and Risk Management in Early Psychosis

This manual describes the key elements when responding to young people and their families during a crisis.

A first episode of psychosis frequently presents as a crisis for a young person and their family, as it is a period often accompanied by emotional distress and impaired functioning. Crises can be overwhelming experiences for young people and their families and often leave individuals feeling vulnerable, isolated and misunderstood. As crises can often be the initial contact with, or entry to, a service they provide a pivotal opportunity to engage young people and their families. Effectively intervening during a crisis may prevent the delay of necessary interventions, reduce hospitalisation, trauma, severity and duration of signs and symptoms, and promote rapid recovery while preserving social supports.
