Young people engaged in vocational programs at headspace Glenroy and Sunshine were recently given the opportunity to meet with employers and recruiters as part of a ‘Meet the employer’ event held at headspace Glenroy.
The event offered young job seekers tips and valuable insights into what recruiters and employers are looking for when hiring potential employees, and provided for them an opportunity to practice networking with employers and employment brokers.
Advice was given on how to write standout cover letters and resumes, common mistakes to avoid during an interview and when writing job applications, and personal anecdotes on career pathways were also shared.
The ‘Meet the Employer’ event has proved to be an extremely successful initiative said Andrew Synnot, a vocational youth peer worker at headspace Sunshine. “Feedback from the young people in attendance has been very positive,” Mr Synnot said.
“The young people took a lot home with them after the event, including practical tips on cover letters and resume writing through to an understanding of the interview process and the important part they play in that exchange.
“Our goal is to get young people into employment, and an event like this is an effective and practical way to help make that happen.”
