A new Australian government initiative to address bullying in schools will see an Anti-Bullying Rapid Review set up and co-chaired by Orygen’s Head of Suicide Research Professor Jo Robinson.
The Review will be conducted over six months and will inform the development of a national standard to address bullying, and will be based on both research evidence and the lived experience of school communities, government departments and young people.
Professor Jo Robinson, who will co-chair the Review with clinical psychologist Dr Charlotte Keating, said she was looking forward to co-chairing the review, and providing advice and guidance based not only on research but on the experiences of those directly impacted by bullying.
“We will be travelling around the country and talking to people from all walks of life who understand the impacts of bullying – including parents, teachers, students and other key stakeholders,” Professor Robinson said.
“We want to understand the experiences of those dealing with bullying in schools, and explore the evidence in best practice approaches to tackling the issue.
“Developing a national anti-bullying strategy is an important step towards supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people as they navigate the challenges of school – giving them the best chance to learn and succeed.”
The Review will examine current school procedures and best practice methods to address bullying behaviours, and will draw on work already underway across the country to stamp out bullying in schools.
“Many young people are struggling with their mental health, and tragically rates of suicidal behaviour in young people are rising,” Professor Robinson said.
“Bullying is certainly not the only factor at play here, but combatting bullying in schools is a key part of helping young people feel safe and supported as they grow into adulthood.”
