Psychological Interventions: Why, How and When to use in Early Psychosis

This manual is intended as a guide for clinicians working in an integrated case management role using psychological interventions to treat young people with early psychosis.

Psychological interventions are an essential aspect in treating young people experiencing an episode of psychosis. These interventions are informed by identified goals, values and issues for the young person and their family. More importantly, psychological interventions help manage early psychosis by reducing symptoms and related distress, supporting adaptation to the experience of psychosis and promoting functional recovery. Clinicians working with young people with early psychosis should ensure that interventions do not focus solely on symptom reduction. Interventions are most effective when they help young people regain their usual developmental trajectory, enhance their overall wellbeing and help with social and occupational recovery.
