A Shared Understanding: Psychoeducation in Early Psychosis

This manual is intended to be a practical guide to psychoeducation interventions for clinicians working with young people and their families in early psychosis services.

Psychoeducation about early psychosis and its treatment is a key element of intervention. By developing knowledge and understanding, psychoeducation helps young people and families feel more engaged, reduces stigma, and empowers them in a situation where they are likely to feel helpless. Each individual’s experience of psychosis will be unique, and psychoeducation can only be effective if it is collaborative and responsive to the experience and needs of each young person and their family. This approach to psychoeducation is core to the principles of intervention for early psychosis, and it has two aims: to increase knowledge about psychosis and, by improving insight, to help improve outcomes.
